Meanwhile……

The days are flying by and we are finding that we are now up to Marie’s block for our friendship group. We will be doing a “Flower Basket” block for Marie and using half square triangle technique. Marie’s favourite colour is purple so guess what? Yes you got it right, she will get purple flower baskets for her quilt. We got several of Heather’s blocks for her friendship quilt done and on the design wall last week. I will post a few pics. I have two Mystery Quilt designs on the go also, and am busting to get back to that. I went to the Wodonga Craft Fair last weekend with my friend Alex. Wow, wish I had a never ending credit card. I found Fair to be very good this time. I went a few years back, but this time it was great.

An order has been placed for some very special Kona Bay fabrics which feature Dragons. Very mysterious, and will arrive about September. So look out for those.

Rebecca is running a class on how to make A4 folder covers in gorgeous patchwork fabrics on 21/7/14. It will be great as I now will be able to distinguish my patterns folder when I need it in a hurry, which is most of the time lol. Ok then, hope you are all safe and well and enjoying this cool weather. My studio/workroom is just wonderful with my wood heater burning and a comfy arm chair to sit in. Great days for sewing!

See you next time.

Dianne’s Merry Kite Quilt

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Our first Friendship Group Quilt is coming together!

Good evening all and welcome to my blog.

Yesterday, our Friendship Group at Sharon’s, started to put all Dianne’s blocks together to form a quilt. So exciting as it is our first group project.

We each made a “Merry Kite” block for Dianne, who chose black and brights for her colour scheme. Dianne is rather new to quilting and has advanced in leaps and bounds with her confidence in sewing skills. She is so pleased to see this all coming together. These blocks were made in February this year. So after making sashing strips and considering the placement of each block, we got together and started sewing. Dianne simply adores pets so some of us included paw print fabric in our blocks.

Our next Friendship Group is coming up this weekend. We will be learning and making the Jinney Beyer Flower Pot/Forest Trail Block. This one should be fun girls!!!

So ……I am about to add some photos. It’s my first attempt so wish me luck!

Bye until next time and thanks for reading.

Charity Rag Quilt

At the beginning of the year our sewing group decided to make a charity quilt. For a couple of months we collected old denim jeans and shorts, flannel shirts and anything else we thought would go well into a blokes quilt.

Once we had a suitable pile, it was on for young and old as we measured, cut and sewed our way through 144  squares to make a rag quilt.

It was a great day had by all ages. “Many hands makes light work” is the old saying and this proved to be the case on the day, with everyone taking their turn in cutting, counting and sewing.

The end result was a fabulous bloke’s quilt which we donated to the local Men’s Shed.

Welcome to Sharon’s world

Sharonsshop1

Tadaaaaa.  Welcome to the new sewing room at Sharon’s Sewing Service.

Sharonsshop2

But where’s the fabric I hear you asking?

Sharonsshop3

It’s in its own room around to the right. You can just see the white arch way in the photo above. Thats where I like to go and dream about all the quilts I could make if I had endless hours.

Ed has certainly been a busy man building this room and making it extend. Adding in the creature comforts of a wood fire for these cooler winter months. Nothing like sewing in front of a wood fire, even better when there is soup on top cooking for lunch.

There is also now a wall of design, located very strategically near the tea, coffee & biscuits. Its always good to take 5 and ponder the next move. On the wall to the right you can see some of the creations from our friendship quilting days.

If you can’t make it into the shop at Culcairn you can always visit  online. Come check out the specials.

Well I can’t sew and blog at the same time, so its time to go.

Friendship & the Merry Kite

The start of 2014 saw 14 ladies come together to form the Culcairn Thread Catchers & Friends sewing group.

The major project for this year is a friendship quilt for each of the ladies. Our first meeting saw names and blocks being drawn from hats in a way to decide what blocks were going to be sewn and for whom. The colour theme was then chosen by that lady. The idea of this friendship quilt was that everyone would sew the chosen block in the colour theme and all those blocks would go to one lady. Everyone gets to learn a new block each month and at some stage each lady will receive 13 block to do with what ever she wants of the same block pattern.

For our very first block for the year the Merry Kite was drawn and the theme was “black and bright”. As you can see there was a variety of colours and designs sewn. For some of the ladies it was their very first block ever sewn. Watching the blocks come together from their designs was very exciting.

What was even more exciting was laying the completed blocks out on the bed and playing around with different backgrounds.

The classic black frame won the day.

It will be wonderful see this once it has been complete so keep an eye out on the blog for the finished item.

Out and About at Henty

Sunday 23rd March 2014,  had the shop relocating for the day to Henty.Image

The Henty Art & Photography Expo was being held all weekend and Sharon’s Sewing Service was asked to bring the shop along. With a two hour window to set up, bodies worked in overdrive. As you can see from the photos, there was a lot to set up. With the help of some fantastic ladies and one very helpful husband, the job was accomplished. It is amazing how much you can fit into a small red car.

It was a good day out and having a chance to see the talent shown at the Art and Photography Expo was wonderful.

The end of the day came quickly and it was time pack up and head for home. The person that said a change is as good as a holiday lies. We all need a holiday after that little change.

Speaking of change, there are some exciting things happening to the shop in Culcairn, but more on that later.

Don’t worry if you missed us at Henty, our next out and about will be over at Beechworth for the Easter Markets, maybe we will see you there. If going out is not your thing, you can always find us online at http://www.sharonssewingservice.com.au/home.
